London 2012 Olympics – Athletics Day 2

Brody and I had the most amazing time at the Athletics (Track & Field) event. I’m pretty sure I had a smile on my face the whole time we were there.  It was also nice to spend a little time together without Henry.

The tickets were a last minute purchase on Friday night for the evening session of Athletics on Saturday night.  People have been complaining about empty seats at the Olympic events due to unused accreditation tickets.  To resolve the issue they have been releasing tickets the day before each event.  I had been trying to get tickets for a few days but due to the over 2 million people on the website I never seem to get any luck until Friday night.

These are the highlights for the evening’s events:
  • Gaylen Rupp, USA (and UofO) won silver in the 10,000m with Mo Farah from GB winning gold.  Both train in Oregon with Alberto Salazar.
  • Women’s 100m final where the USA, Carmelita Jeter, took silver.
  • Men’s long jump final with Will Claye, USA, getting the bronze behind GB’s Rutherford who won the gold
  • Women’s heptathlon final where the crowd went crazy for Jennifer Ennis, GB, who won the 800m solidifying her gold in the heptathlon.
While it wasn’t a great night for the USA, Team GB had what they are calling the biggest night in 100 years for British Athletics wining 3 gold medals in 45 minutes.

We had amazing tickets, which were, located about 8 rows up away from the track and right next to the torch.  We were so close in fact that they came by our section to see if anyone wanted to be reallocated seats if they were too hot.
Here we are getting ready to enter the stadium.

Hard to tell but this is the start of the Women's 100m final.
*The torch features 204 copper ‘petals’ which each represent the nations competing at the London games and were carried alongside national flags in the opening ceremony.
* Our tickets were £295 each.  I only include this so when I look back at this later I can remember how much it was.  Beach Volleyball was  £20, Swimming was  £95 and the morning session of Athletics was  £95.
